R.I.P. Narrative Journalism

Maybe it was just the economy. There are, after all, thousands of journalists out of work, and many of those still working have taken pay cuts. Or maybe it’s because our national ADHD makes in-depth reporting and storytelling irrelevant. Whatever the reason, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard had to be canceled. Candy Cooper wrote a nice essay on the “Death of Slow Journalism” in Columbia Journalism Review. It isn’t just about breaking news and social media. Rather, she reminds us that today’s style of reporting came into vogue when USA Today changed the rules for how newspapers look and read. Worth reading.
